Earl Dreeshen, MP for Red Deer, and Luke Ouellette, Minister of Alberta Transportation and MLA for Innisfail-Sylvan Lake, today announced that Highway 2 from south of the junction with Highway 2A to south of the town of Bowden will be repaved and reconstruction of 23rd street and Westview Crescent’s sanitary systems, water systems and roads can begin. These projects are just two examples of the commitment of both governments to strengthening the Alberta economy.
The $2-million Highway 2 & 2A project will improve transportation efficiency and create local jobs. The government of Canada will invest up to $1 million in the project. The Government of Alberta will contribute the balance of the total eligible cost of the project.
The governments of Canada and Alberta will each invest up to $632,405 in the 23rd Street and Westview Crescent reconstruction project. The Town of Bowden will contribute the balance of the total eligible cost of the $1.9 million project.
“This is great news for Bowden, ” said Dreeshen, “Our government is working hard to get municipal leaders the resources they need. The reconstruction of 23rd Street is badly needed and upgrading Highway 2 & 2A near Bowden will improve safety and will benefit everyone in our community.”
“I am glad to be working with the federal government on these projects as they represent a significant investment in Bowden’s future,” said Ouellette. “The replacement of water and wastewater infrastructure will help ensure public health safety and support the community’s vision for a greener future. Repaving Highway 2 will improve traffic safety and enhance quality of life for residents.”
"This is an exciting time for our community. On behalf of council & the citizens of Bowden, I want to take this opportunity to thank MP Earl Dreeshen and MLA Luke Ouellette for their continued support of our municipality,” said Mayor Cody Berggren. “Together with our federal and provincial government partners, the Town of Bowden will continue to strive to help strengthen and benefit the local and regional economy in central Alberta through future similar upgrade projects to our community's infrastructure."
These projects are two of 156 projects across the province that will break ground quickly thanks to a joint federal-provincial investment of more than $443 million. Together with municipal and other contributions, the total investment in local infrastructure improvements in Alberta for the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund exceeds $550 million. Today’s announcement includes a joint funding contribution of close to $174 million for 96 municipal projects in communities of fewer than 100,000 residents. The governments of Canada and Alberta have taken steps to get shovels in the ground and to flow money faster for targeted infrastructure projects in Alberta communities in the 2009 and 2010 construction seasons.
Central to Alberta’s Budget 2009 is Alberta’s Capital Plan, which supports $7.2 billion in 2009-10 and a record $23.2 billion over three years to build roads, health care facilities, schools and other public infrastructure. This year’s investment alone supports approximately 80,000 jobs across the economy directly benefitting Albertans and Alberta communities. This capital investment complements the government’s four-point plan for economic recovery, which calls for keeping an eye on spending, using savings to protect programs and services for Albertans while keeping taxes low, continuing to invest in infrastructure, and promoting the province on the world stage.
